Working away at this and wondering how much light I may yet want to let in and at the same time resisting the temptation to eat away at some of the small leaves before I make a first proof and am then able to properly see what I have. In lino, once it’s gone, it’s gone.

A partially cut linocut block in roughly square format. A cormorant sits atop a tree, its wings spread. Within the tree’s leaves are lines of text which read ‘Thence up he flew and on the tree of life the middle tree and highest there that grew sat like a cormorant’. Leaves are carved between the letters. To the left of the block, a small gouge gives scale. It is roughly the same width and height as the block.

There are three engravings, lino- and monotype prints, drying on a line in my atelier. You see one closer up and the two others, each time a bit further away. The monotype is first printed on the page. Its colours are pink, bright lemon yellow, light green and a light blue. They form the basis underneath the lino cut print in black ink. The lino cut is divided in two, one half is on one third of the image and the other part takes two thirds of the space. The one third has a black background. On it are a moon figurine, a house, a road, and one half of the main character, a woman with a sheet over her head that stops just above her ankles. It looks like a funny, a bit creepy, ghost costume. The two third part, has a white background, meaning you see the colours of the monotype, and there you see the other half of the woman. She is wearing a dress and holds a bird in her hand. The sheet covers only her head this time. Next to her is a landscape with a road and river, with mountains in the background. The sky has clouds with the sun peaking through.

The first layer of the engraving, the monotype. Its colours are pink, bright lemon yellow, light green and a light blue.

The lino cut before printing after I finished carving, with the knives used next to it. Plus, a lot of little bits, scraps of the carving.

Happy birthday #entomologist & scientific illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717)! Her stepdad Jacob Marrel & students trained her as an artist. She began painting insects & plants by 13. She wrote, “I spent my time investigating insects. [...] I realized that other caterpillars produced beautiful butterflies or moths, and that silkworms did the same. This led me to collect all the caterpillars I could find in order to see how they changed”.⁠

Work in progress. The text is from Milton’s epic poem ‘Paradise Lost’ (book IV). It’s slow work and every so often I take rubbings to see how things are progressing. Once carved, I’ll proof it and then decide if I want to let more light into the tree. The fourth photo is flipped so that you can read the text if you zoom in.

My final Canadian province #linocut is my home #province #Ontario along with its symbols, the common #loon and trillium. The block was inked 'à la poupée' (with different colours, black, green and yellow, in different areas) and printed by hand on lovely Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.

Ontario is where I was born and where I now call home. Growing up on Lake Ontario I was always aware of our region being defined by the Great Lakes, 1/2

After a few days of thinking I decided to give it another try with a different ink + following the advice I was given in the last post (spritz water on the fabric before printing)... and here is the beautiful purple result !
I am so happy with how it looks ! 🪻
Tomorrow I'll be at Place Saint Pierre (Toulouse) art market from 10am to 7pm! I will not be selling these bags just yet because I just printed them and they still need to dry some more.
