It is really important for everyone to increase their messaging security these days.

That's why I wrote "Why You Should (Still) Use #Signal As Much As Possible" -- see changelog.complete.org/archive .

#SignalGate wasn't because of a problem with Signal. It was because people were using it for things they weren't supposed to be using it for, and made sloppy mistakes in the process.

My article is designed to be something you can hand to a non-technical friend and explain why Signal is useful.

@jgoerzen

I'm sure, that Signal is secure (for its intended use cases) and can be trusted. But… 🙂

1. I don't want to use Google Android or Apple iOS. There is no first class client for Linux//.

2. I don't want to fuel the Amazon cloud of Jeff B., but prefer services in my home "country", the .

3. I don't want to use a phone number for creating an account. E.g. it makes multi-account setups hard.

Call me an old-fashioned grey beard, but I'll stay with 🙂

@debacle Hey, you do you. As I noted in the article, there are setups that are arguably more secure than Signal, but they tend to not be as practical or as usable for the majority of people. Rule out iOS and Android and you've got something that grandma isn't going to be using, right?

I'm not saying Signal is the best in absolutely every measure compared to absolutely every possibility. I'm saying it's the best practical improvement available to the greatest amount of people.

@jgoerzen

I agree and I would not even say, that my preferred solutions (mainly or other federated systems) would be more secure for the threat models Signal tries to counter.

But, of course I can't recommend Signal to my family or to my friends, because they would not be able to reach me then and would wonder why I don't eat my own cat food 🙂

However, esp. with (which has an Indian variant now, called ), I'ld say it's equally easy to get even non-tech people on board.
