Found some pictures of the fixed thumb for this machine from another seller. The importer we bought it from doesn't bother with the fixed thumb and only has a €300 hydraulic thumb, which isn't in stock until autumn anyways.
Doesn't look complicated, need to dig through my steel treasure pile and see if I can find enough heavy plate to make one.
Our machine already has the mountings on the boom, although only one hole instead of three.
Set up a new #Welding trolley for my #TIG / #PlasmaCutter unit. It's really difficult in Australia to find low-profile welding trolleys that handle a heavy machine (20+KG), AND have a long shelf for the unit itself. That's compounded by a design quirk on mine - the shield gas inlet is dead centre, which means the fittings align with the closest point of the gas bottle. The solution - #DIY standoffs for the bottle's cradle (until I can make something more engineered). Soon, more #Art #Sculpture.

Souvent on me demande si je fais fondre l'acier pour le modeler. On me demande aussi si j'utilise des moules. La réponse aux 2 questions est non. Je plie le métal à froid (masse et enclume) et je monte mes structures à partir d'un mauvais dessin 2D, dans les airs.
J'oublie de prendre des photos mais j'avais documenté ma Férale.

Looking into welding a hollow steel d20 dice aka icosahedron.
There are three factors that are dependent on the final result:
- thickness of the steel sheet metal,
- length of the equilateral triangle, and
- diameter as twice the circumradius.
Looked at sheet metal thickness of 2-5 mm and triangle length of 75-200 mm where the end resulting weight is 0.78-13.9 kg without the reduction/addition of welding and using steel density of 0.008 g/mm^3. The diameter respected to the triangle length is 143-380 mm.
Oh no, my 1970s #foldingbike seems to turn into a brake-in-half-bike soon.
Any recommondations? Just clean the area and MIG #weld it? Add some reinforcement?
For a change, crazy #fantasy (applicable) science: #wood can be welded. It requires friction and pressure (and no oxygen) to melt the lignin and then keep that pressure for the #welding to hold, but it's actually stronger than adhesives when it cures.
So, if you want a cool construction method for your elves - here you go.

Stainless Bob tack welding our solar arch on deck of our boat in Brighton in 2016. The only part of the refit I didn't do myself.
I thought he was doing a pretty good job of this. I later found out he's got a stack of welding certifications, including one for work on nuclear power plants 
He could weld stuff other welders called impossible, like a new exhaust pipe into the rotten aluminium body of a diesel heater.
Someone seems to have gotten fed up with the hammer flying off the handle and just welded it to a pipe

Apparently this trailer changed the size of the hitch plate at some point.
Now do I want to make my own hitch plate? Plasma cutter will cut the base… I’d need to weld the actual receiver to it. grumpgrump.
