The Kelvin Aqueduct in Maryhill. Opened in 1790, it carries the Forth and Clyde Canal over the River Kelvin. This canal was the world's first manmade sea-to-sea water way designed to provide a shortcut for shipping, making it the forerunner of the much larger Suez and Panama Canals.

The remains of one of the slipways of the former Meadowside Shipyard on the foreshore of the north bank of the Clyde in Glasgow revealed by last night's very low Spring tide. In the background is the new Govan-Partick pedestrian bridge.

Pre-1900 polychromatic brick buildings on Kelvindale Road in Glasgow. These were built for the nearby Kelvindale Paper Mill. The larger ones in the foreground were for managers, while the terraced cottages in the background were for ordinary workers.

They may have seen better days, but I love these crow-stepped gables and windows on the former Robert Burley and Sons Hammer Shaft Factory in Fairley Street in the Ibrox area of Glasgow. It was built in 1892 to replace a smaller factory on the same site.

Victorian industrial buildings on Elliot Street in the Anderston area of Glasgow. Constructed around 1870, the building on the left was originally the Anderston Brass Foundry, while the one on the right was home to Cook and Son Limited, which was a saw and file manufacturer.

Former Georgian-era cotton mill on Old Rutherglen Road in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. Built in 1817, it's the oldest surviving iron-framed mill building in the city, and possibly the whole of Scotland. It was originally owned by the cotton Spinner Robert Humphrey and then by Robert Thomson of the nearby Adelphi Cotton Works. It's currently in the process of being converted into residential accommodation.

Love the shape of the Flemish style gable on this section on the former Hamilton and Manson grain mill on West Street in Glasgow. Designed by William F. McGibbon, it was built in the 1890s.

The Barclay Curle Titan. Designed by William Arrol and Company, and built in 1920, this is one of four giant titan cranes which remain on the Clyde. This one is at the former Barclay Curle shipyard in the Whiteinch area of Glasgow. When it was in working order, it was capable of lifting loads of up to 150 tonnes.

The former Hamilton and Manson grain mill on West Street in Glasgow. Designed in a Flemish style by William F. McGibbon, it was built in the 1890s. It always strikes me that buildings like this are the castles of the Victorian industrial age.

For the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888, he was offering a service where people could get visiting cards printed in just three minutes. William Lyon died in 1913, but the business carried on until 1972, when it finally ceased trading. The factory itself had closed some eight years earlier in 1964.

The former Lyon Printing and Stationery Factory on Renfrew Street in central Glasgow. William Lyon was born in Troon in 1845, and established his printing and stationery business after moving to Glasgow in 1867. By 1885, he not only had this factory (where he made the world's first printed personalised Christmas cards), but also shops on Sauchiehall Street and Argyle Street.

The former Clydesdale Colour and Oil Works on Cook Street in the Tradestone area of Glasgow. Designed by W.F. McGibbon in a Venetian Gothic style, it was built in 1900 for Blacklock and MacArthur. It's one of my favourite examples of Glasgow's Victorian industrial architecture.
