Nett euch kennenzulernen.
It's been an #AmateurRadio kind of day. We did ham public service training at a local park, and stayed to try #POTA — but didn't make any contacts. SSB just wasn't getting out; others at the park tried listening to us and weren't hearing recognizable audio.
I was using a new piece of coax, so I thought maybe that was the problem. I decided to test at home, away from any other radios. I set up my POTA configuration in the back yard, including the same PAC-12 antenna. With both known-good coax and the new coax, I couldn't pick myself up at all on SSB on any local webSDRs on 10m. With a vertical, ground plane antenna, shouldn't I be able to reach a local websdr (within 10 miles)?
I hunted POTA on CW, and got AL (484 miles) on 20m and ON (633 miles) on 40m.
My phone alarm for #SST went off. I eventually quit hunting POTA and started scrolling around in the SST frequencies. I couldn't find anyone calling CQ SST on any band, using either my PAC-12 or my 80M EFHW, across the bands. Also, the RBN didn't show K1USN, which seemed odd. Pressing on without thinking hard about that, I called CQ SST (for the first time) using the PAC-12 on 40m with 25W (vaguely hoping that I had a bad setup for some reason and no one would hear me). The reverse beacon network picked me up quickly from over 600 miles away. I finally got a response from WB2FUV Mike in NY kindly telling me that the contest wasn't open until 00:00Z — I had completely lost track of changing my phone's SST alarm for daylight savings time:
So CW works, but I still don't know whether I messed something up on my rig for SSB, and none of the other hams in my house is trying to operate CW right now. So I need to resolve that for them. My Technician is planning to test for General in a few weeks and will be wanting to call CQ on SSB across the bands soon!
