Look at this wonderful young toad who I found today while moving hives. I popped him over in some damp earth beneath some trees. I felt sorry to have disturbed him from such a safe home. #nature

A young toad, brown against the brown earth. There are red shoots and roots crossing the bare earth, which had been under a flat wooden square. You can clearly see the poison glands either side of the neck. They stop most, but not all, things from eating him. If a dog was to pick him up they'd soon be foaming at the mouth

For #WaterfallWednesday I have this photo taken last week when I was mentoring the 16 year old student from Surrey. This creek is completely dry in the summer. The best time to photograph it is now. It is located in a place known as Xwee Xwhya Luq by the K'ómoks people, in what is called today Courtenay.

heute ließ sich wieder ein c-falter von mir ablichten :3

auf völlig ergrauten blättern vom letzten herbst sitzt ein schmetterlling mit komplett aufgeklappten flügeln und sonnt sich. die flügel sind leuchtend rostrot, fast orange, mit ein paar schwarzen punkt-flecken in der fläche und einer reihe heller flecken nahe am rand. der rand wiederum ist braun, wie auch der pelzige körper des tiers. die ganzen flügel sehen irgendwie ziemlich körnig aus, erst dachte ich das sei bildrauschen, kein gutes foto geworden, zumal das trockene graue laub im hintergrund auch diese grobe körnung zeigt, aber bei genauerer betrachtung komme ich zu dem schluss: der sieht tatsächlich so aus, bisschen krümelige textur in den farben. zwischen vorder- und hinterflügel hat der falter einen charakteristischen geschwungenen und sehr tiefen einschnitt.

Später hat der Sperber die Position gewechselt und hat den armen Spatzen aufgelauert. Minutenlang ist er geblieben und hat sich durch die Kamera und mich nicht stören lassen.
