So interesting to be learning a #language where pausing or sustaining a sound longer than usual can actually change the word you're saying. I catch myself doing this to give myself a bit of breathing room to aid in language production but of course i'm picking the language where doing that may actually make you unintelligible :) #finnish #suomi #Linguistics

This summer semester I'm very excited to teach a brand-new seminar on "Open Science practices in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition" @UniKoeln!
Some 20 B.A. and M.A. students studying #linguistics or a Romance language (+ one post-doc) signed up for this rather experimental course, many of whom had never heard of #OpenScience before. For this course, I've ditched the University's learning management system (ILIAS) and opted for a maximally open way to share teaching materials as I go along: https://elenlefoll.quarto.pub/os-linguistics2025/.
Students are also required to attend at least two #ReproducibiliTea in the #HumaniTeas session and to co-author a blog post about one session. Very curious to see how things will pan out!
I am a sociolinguist and a lot of our research on real, authentic language usage, especially among young people, depends on web crawlers.
Your anti-crawling activism actively sabotages research about e. g. queer language, gender, racism, hate speech and social structures.
Yeah, consent is the highest authority, and "AI" shouldn't be used to replace or underpay workers.
But at some point some of y'all really just act like anti-organ donation activists.
Hello from Dominica! #HelloWorld #Dominica #language #linguistics
Ever get frustrated trying to quickly look up a word on #Wiktionary on your phone, wading through etymology first? I did too.
So I built Kwiktionary: a fast, mobile-friendly interface for Wiktionary that prioritizes definitions.
Try it out: https://kwiktionary.vercel.app/
It's #OpenSource (built with #NextJs & #FastApi)! Feedback welcome. Boosts appreciated!

Quick question: Is there a specific English-language term for "the cousin of one's father"?

Your attention please. Verbing nouns and nouning verbs is common practice, but this should be extended. Your task for this week, class, is to verb a different adjective every day.

Carney’s Checkmate: How Canada's Quiet Bond Play Forced Trump to Drop Tariffs
https://deanblundell.substack.com/p/carneys-checkmate-how-canadas-quiet
“This was the determining factor in Trump’s surrender. Not the public spats, not the retaliatory tariffs Canada slapped on U.S. autos (though those stung). It was the quiet, coordinated threat of a Treasury bond unwind that bent Trump’s knee.”
Aside: Why are we calling northern countries like Canada, much of Europe, Japan.. the “free world”?
