@pitrh

I didn't even know #OpenBSD had its own rsync implementation.

What was the reason for re-implementing/reinventing, it, do you know?

@rl_dane @pitrh I think the last line in the README says it all. :)

###
rsync has specific running modes for the super-user. It also pumps arbitrary data from the network onto your file-system. openrsync is about 10 000 lines of C code: do you trust me not to make mistakes?
###

@rl_dane I think it was in part because Kristaps wanted to do it, plus that having a BSD licensed implementation of the protocol and program would be nice to have. Then time passes, and HEY! It's usable!

@pitrh @rl_dane Wasn't related to delopment of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) and OpenBGPD?

No, it was RPKI

> openrsync is written as part of the rpki-client(1) project, an RPKI validator for OpenBSD. openrsync was funded by NetNod, IIS.SE, SUNET and 6connect.

@rl_dane @dexter @pitrh Because taking something and rewriting it into something good is what they do :)

@pitrh so I guess there was a corresponding donation to OpenBSD foundation too?

Tim "Apple" and his predecessor Steve Jobs "creator" never seemed particularly generous when it came to donations to the OpenBSD Foundation. ;-/

But gosh, did I ever just read some story about how Apple rush shipped a bunch of things out of India in order to dodge tariffs? They seem to be able to penny pinch at a level that requires so much capital as to be incomprehensible to a poor homeless thousands of dollars in debt person such as I.

@dch As far as I am aware, unfortunately not. Never too late to lobby them for it though .)

@pitrh yea it might be time for me annual email to Tim Apple demanding the fruit is shared more widely

@dch @pitrh Apple has been a pretty reliable sponsor to EuroBSD and BSCan the past few years.

And as I've heard FreeBSD people say: "Yeah, they take some of our code. We got their compiler. It's a good deal."

@kp true I think in the balance it’s good at least for FreeBSD.

I’m thinking here of Kristapz for openrsync which was IIRC mostly his work, and OpenBSD in general where the impact of OpenSSH and to a lesser degree LibreSSL probably hasn’t received the acknowledgement and support that its outsized impact deserves @pitrh

@dch @pitrh Fair. I certainly wouldn't be upset if they decided to spend a bit more money on the open source projects they rely on, but at least they do more than the nothing the BSDs get from a bunch of other downstream consumers.

@kp @dch @pitrh Patches. With all this attention to this real or perceived “situation “, the metric of success is what meaningful, upstreamable patches come out of it.

@dexter food and rent for maintainers also @kp @pitrh

@dch @kp @pitrh Checks the ISC license for that clause…
